// Notes

Fuckin' sick. Their performance at the Metro last December was (inter)stellar, so I had to catch them again here at the Bohemian National Cemetery. In a way the interred made this a an oversold show! Without being a smartass, there's something interesting in the contrast of holding such a life-affirming event in a place that forces you to confront death. Anyway, they performed Absolute Elsewhere in whole again, and it was even better this time. The crowd was absolutely digging it, especially with the choice of tunes after the AE set. I had a better look at who it was that came out on stage for the final soundcheck and found that it's just the band in jackets and shades. Last year I thought it was their techs jammin' out, but it's actually the band. In my defense it was much darker inside at the Metro and much easier to see in the daylight here. I still included the final soundcheck, again with separate fades, since it's still cool. A short program was handed out at the gate that has some nice illustrations, a map, a partial food and beverage menu, plus some words of the occult, so I've included scans of it, too. The sound setup was a couple short stacks sitting on either side of the stage, so I chose a spot in the danger zone for the sake of trying to get good sound and a nice stereo image. Three circle pits opened up throughout the night, and while I avoided being in the middle of all of them, I tended to be close enough to bare the force of some second and third-hand collisions. Bless the body blockers on the circle pit perimeter! The tape turned out pretty good in the end, although there's some phasing or image "wandering," particularly near the end of Absolute Elsewhere and the rest of the set afterward when the third and largest pit of the night opened up almost right next to me, all because I had to keep something of an eye on loose moshers headed my way. I was pulled down a few times, too, and I helped somebody crowdsurf over my head for the first time, but sound generally returns quickly to normal. There's a more extended period at 2:15 into "The Giza Power Plant" where I watch a large number of the circle pit all prostrating in worship toward the stage, because it was too wild to turn away from. Not sure who's on keys. They didn't introduce him, he doesn't quite look like Niklas Malmqvist, who played with them last year, and I haven't been able to dig any name up. Please let me know if you recognize him.
